Seabo Saleshando has once again put Botswana on the tennis map after becoming the only local player to progress to Round Two of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J30 second leg at the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone on August 18.

The young talent defeated South African Michael Gell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, in a confident display that highlighted his growing consistency. Saleshando was initially scheduled to face Ishak Mahfoudh, who failed to show up, but he made the most of his revised draw. Speaking after his victory, he described the encounter as competitive, crediting Gell for pushing him to bring out his best performance on court.

Saleshando acknowledged the weight of expectations from fans and supporters as the only Botswanan player left in the competition. He stressed the importance of keeping a clear mind, saying he would focus on playing with discipline and composure as he heads into Round Two.

In the girls’ singles, Botswana’s hopes were cut short when Malak Macheng lost to Zimbabwe’s Minenhle Moyo, 6-2, 6-3. The result mirrored her earlier struggles in the first leg, where she also fell short of advancing further.

The ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J30 is regarded as a key platform for rising players to gain international exposure and experience against top competition. With only one Botswanan advancing past the opening round, attention now shifts fully to Saleshando as he prepares for his next challenge.

His progression highlights both the opportunities and challenges faced by Botswana’s young tennis players. For fans and stakeholders, the result signals the need to continue investing in talent development while celebrating the strides made by players like Saleshando who continue to represent the country on global stages.
