The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Dithapelo L. Keorapetse, has urged for stronger ties between Botswana and India, extending cooperation beyond traditional sectors to the parliamentary level. He made the call during a courtesy visit by India’s High Commissioner to Botswana, HE Bharath K. Kuthati.
Hon. Keorapetse noted that Botswana and India share 59 years of diplomatic relations built on mutual respect and democratic values. He emphasized the central role of Parliament as a custodian of democracy and outlined modernization plans that include going digital, improving research, and strengthening media services. These reforms, he explained, will enable Parliament to serve citizens more effectively.
The Speaker also stressed the importance of building partnerships with allies such as India to address economic challenges. He reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to democracy, human rights, and socio-economic development under the leadership of President Advocate Duma Boko. Despite weaker mineral markets, he highlighted opportunities for economic diversification that could be supported by strong international partnerships.
In response, HE Kuthati described Botswana–India relations as “distinct and special.” He recalled the long history of Indian settlement and investment in Botswana and pointed to India’s own path of economic transformation as an example of what partnerships can achieve. He pledged India’s support in helping Botswana overcome its current challenges, noting the potential of India’s growing diamond demand to strengthen trade.
HE Kuthati also committed to promoting stronger parliamentary linkages between the two nations, underscoring the importance of direct institutional cooperation in advancing shared goals.
The meeting reinforced the value of Botswana–India relations and set the stage for deeper collaboration across political, economic, and social fronts.
