Tawana Moremi Quits UDC

In an unexpected twist of events today in parliament, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Hon. Gladys Kokorwe, informed the House that she had received notice of the resignation of the Maun West MP, the Hon. Tawana Moremi, from the main opposition party, UDC.

Tawana has long declared to quit politics and he even cited his reasons to quit Parliament. He first announced his intention to quit Umbrella for Democratic Change last year through Facebook but it was only confirmed today. One might wonder why it was announced during the budget speech presentation, this is because Members of Parliament sit according to their party affiliation, henceforth the announcement was made in the context of seating changes.

The announcement of the resignation of Tawana from the UDC is likely to over power the whole budget speech. Tawana Moremi has as a result of his resignation from the UDC to be an independent MP, changed seats. Meanwhile UDC and Botswana Congress Party (BCP)  have joined forces to from a stronger opposition. Interesting times for Botswana.
