Development Officer

Position Description

Β 

The Development Officer is part of a high-functioning nonprofit dedicated to maintaining the vibrancy, health, and prosperity of Inspired Horizons Association. As part of the team, the Development Officer is responsible for managing a portfolio of institutional and individual donor fundraising activities, including grant writing and reporting, producing Letters of Interest (LOIs), soliciting sponsorships, producing appeals and campaigns, and managing events. The Development Officer is a strong project manager, writer, relationship builder, and strategic thinker who is passionate about IHA’s mission. This position is supported by a strong development team and able to work and learn from seasoned professionals in the nonprofit field.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Research and identify corporations, foundations and government funding opportunities
  • Prepare funding proposals for government, corporate and foundation grants, including coordinating proposal components with evaluation, programs and finance departments
  • Identify new local and national foundation prospects and engage them
  • Attend meetings with the Executive Director and liaise with corporate, foundation and government partners and internally with other IHA Departments.
  • Lead IHA’s individual donor program, including producing appeals, and leading the groups of fundraising volunteer
  • Lead IHA’s donor communications work, including producing donor newsletters and social media campaigns in collaboration with the Communications Department
  • Plan & coordinate IHA’s fundraisers (with the Executive Team), including small events and the annual gala.
  • In-depth collaboration with IHA’s programs and work teams
  • Contribute to overall fundraising objectives
  • Work closely with Director of Development and Management Team to execute strategic plans in order to meet goals and build long-term financial sustainability

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Must be a Motswana citizen.
  • Bachelor’s degree required in International Development, Social Entrepreneurship, Education, or a related field of study; Master’s an added advantage.
  • At least two years of work experience in direct fundraising for a non-profit organization with measurable goals
  • Ability to develop and execute complex presentations (philanthropy and cause marketing) based on information gathered from multiple sources
  • Ability to effectively collect, analyze, organize, distill and present information
  • Strong networking skills and a demonstrated ability to liaise and build relationships with diverse stakeholder groups
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize while working to meet multiple deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, both written and oral
  • Knowledge of community development, education, and/or other core areas of IHA’s work is a significant plus
  • Ability to work both independently and also as a team player
  • Strong organization and time management skills

Communications Officer

Position Description:

The Communications Officer plays an integral role in promoting Inspired Horizons Association. The Communications Officer will develop a strategic communications plan for the organization, and s/he will lead and participate in the execution of that plan.

 

Essential Job Functions

Β 

Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated, organizationΒ­-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness and strengthen IHA’s brand identity across key stakeholder audiences
  • Create a brand/marketing/public relations strategy that will allow IHA executive and board leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high Β­level external audiences, including the media, public officials and key influencers
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the sector and organization. Work with the board and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them
  • Build and manage the board Public Awareness committee

 

Communications Operations

  • Oversee the continued development and use of the IHA brand
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, all copy intended for public consumption to ensure its alignment with the strategic communications plan
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of all print and branded materials
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of electronic communications, including IHA’s website, biΒ­weekly electronic newsletter and other electronic communications
  • Curate content and increase audience engagement on IHA’s social media channels
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed
  • Serve as lead point person on media interactions with Executive Director that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the sector, as well as IHA’s programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Manage relationships with any communications Β­related vendors or consultants

 

Team Development/Management

  • Recruit and manage a communications support team, relying exclusively on board, intern and volunteer talent, to support the development and execution of the communications strategy
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis

 

Qualifications

  • Must be a Motswana citizen.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Media Studies, Communications, IT, or a related field of study
  • 2+ years experience in a communications role
  • Experience managing and executing across several communications media
  • Strong written communication skills, required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, required
  • Experience with Adode Creative Suite, preferred
  • Experience with WordPress and/or HTML, preferred
  • Willing to execute dayΒ­-to-Β­day tasks and work independently
  • Capable leader, manager and coach for board, intern or volunteer talent
  • Willingness to share own ideas, even amongst senior staff and board members
  • Ability to prioritize and follow through effectively

Research & Advocacy Officer

Position Description

AsΒ Research & Advocacy Officer (OC4H)Β you will be responsible to conduct research related activities to generate the evidence base of the IHA Initiatives. This role will be key in establishing an evidence base for reports and other advocacy materials, as well as for the OC4H Toolkit.

 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Develop the OC4H Toolkit and adapt to project country contexts.
  • Develop and implement an advocacy strategy to support a complex multiannual project. Support IHA partners in developing and implementing national advocacy strategies.
  • Coordinate evidence gathering and specific research to develop multiple yearly reports for distribution to government, private sector and civil society stakeholders.
  • Create keynotes and presentations, represent the programme at key meetings and conferences where necessary.
  • Support the Research and Development Initiative as necessary.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Β 

  • Must be a Motswana citizen.
  • A degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area.
  • Proven experience creating technical materials for development projects
  • Prior research experience, especially in education, skills development and youth unemployment.
  • Proven experience developing and leading advocacy campaigns at national and/or global level highly desirable, especially in IHA interests.
  • Knowledge of the complete project cycle
  • Some experience and knowledge of ethics, compliance, and corruption and its impacts an advantage
  • Well organised, numerate, excellent communication skills and culturally knowledgeable

Β Program Assistant Internships

Position Description

Program Asst. works with IHA staff developing communications and helping to plan and execute events and educational programs. Responsibilities include researching, writing, organizing, arranging facilities and catering, and promoting events to members and to the community. Duties will be approximately 70% project oriented and 30% clerical. Clerical duties include working with organizational database, mailings to members, and general assistance. Normally they range from 4-10 weeks, with possible permanent placements.
