Vice President and Minister of Finance, Mr Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington South, met with residents of Marulamantsi Ward at Gaborone West Customary Court yesterday. The meeting provided a platform for community members to voice concerns over local infrastructure and public services.
Residents highlighted issues including the deteriorating Kgotla shelter, inadequate street lighting that contributes to crime, and the poor state of facilities at Marulamantsi Junior Secondary School. They also requested a satellite police post, improvements to housing at BHC flats, and measures to control noise pollution from nearby bars.
In response, Mr Gaolathe outlined the government’s broader vision under the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP). He emphasized fiscal prudence, strategic infrastructure development, and economic diversification into sectors such as energy, agriculture, financial services, tourism, and mineral beneficiation.
The Vice President stressed the need for upskilling students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). He highlighted that these skills would cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities necessary for future economic growth.
Mr Gaolathe acknowledged the community’s concerns and encouraged residents to take initiative where possible. He assured them that the government remains committed to implementing long-term solutions to improve infrastructure, safety, and living conditions in Marulamantsi Ward.
