President Bokose of Botswana officiated the renaming of Feld Street in Windhoek to Sir Seretse Khama Street, paying tribute to Botswana’s founding president. The ceremony highlighted the enduring friendship and shared heritage between Botswana and Namibia.
Speaking at the event, President Bokose reflected on the historical significance of Sir Seretse Khama. “We go down the tunnels of time, deep into history, peering through the mists of time, and we bring a luminary in the person of Sir Seretse Khama. We immortalize him here in the city of Windhoek by naming a street in his honor and his memory,” he said.
He described the renaming as a powerful gesture of friendship and a celebration of the strong ties between the peoples of Botswana and Namibia. “Nothing could be greater as a show of friendship, as a celebration of the binding ties and the shared heritage of our peoples. We are humbled. We are most grateful to the Republic of Namibia, to the people of this great country,” President Bokose added.
The ceremony also served as a reminder of Sir Seretse Khama’s legacy in advancing democracy, unity, and nation-building in Botswana. Delegates from both countries acknowledged the symbolic importance of honoring a leader whose vision shaped modern Botswana and strengthened regional relations.
The renaming of Feld Street to Sir Seretse Khama Street reinforces the bond between Botswana and Namibia while ensuring that the legacy of one of Southern Africa’s most respected leaders is preserved for future generations.
