The World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 (WRE Gaborone 26) held a strategic engagement session with the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB) at Avani Gaborone yesterday. The meeting introduced the World Relays and explored opportunities for collaboration to maximize the event’s impact on tourism and the economy.
The session highlighted the alignment of the Relays with Botswana’s 60th Independence Anniversary in 2026, presenting an opportunity to celebrate national achievements while promoting sport tourism as a driver of economic recovery. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) outlined ongoing engagement with key stakeholders, including the hotel and tourism industry, security agencies such as the Botswana Defence Force and Botswana Police Service, and urban development authorities including the District Commissioner’s Office and Town Council for city upgrades and infrastructure.
Government departments, including the Ministry of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, and foreign embassies were also involved to facilitate visa processes and dignitary protocols. The LOC emphasized its commitment to delivering a world-class event with a strong focus on economic benefits, national pride, and international visibility.
The World Relays is expected to attract approximately 6,000 tourists, 1,735 athletes, 600 volunteers, 60 technical staff, and coverage by over 150 international broadcasters. The event is set to showcase Botswana’s ability to host major global sporting events while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Scheduled for May 2nd to 3rd, 2026, at the National Stadium in Gaborone, WRE Gaborone 26 represents a major milestone for Botswana and Africa. The LOC’s comprehensive planning aims to leave a lasting legacy in sport, tourism, and national development, positioning the country as a hub for international sporting excellence.
