The Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs and Lucara Botswana signed a Memorandum of Understanding this afternoon to establish a youth centre in Molepolole. The initiative aims to provide a safe, multi-functional space for young people, addressing issues such as idleness, crime, substance abuse, and gender-based violence while promoting skills development and social engagement.

During the signing event, Acting Permanent Secretary Ms. Thapelo Phuthego highlighted the importance of collaboration between government and the private sector. She stated that the Government alone cannot support all Batswana in achieving their aspirations and emphasized that partnerships are essential for improving quality of life. “The youth are vulnerable to crime and substance abuse; however, their contribution to society remains fundamental, and this partnership will give a positive alternative for young people,” she said.

Managing Director of Lucara Botswana, Ms. Naseem Lahri, reinforced the company’s commitment to impactful partnerships. She stated that Lucara aims to leave a meaningful legacy at both community and national levels. “We are intentional about ensuring that our presence benefits the youth, and this MoU reflects our dedication to their lives,” she added.

Minister Hon Lesego Chombo expressed gratitude to Lucara Botswana for their proactive involvement. She acknowledged the company’s leadership beyond compliance and corporate visibility and encouraged Molepolole youth to actively engage with the centre. According to Minister Chombo, the centre is designed to provide a safe environment that supports skill-building, direction, confidence, and resilience. She emphasized that the centre is not only for recreation but also a platform to reduce crime and substance abuse among young people.

The location of the youth centre in Molepolole was selected strategically, taking into account the village’s population, crime rates, and gender-based violence statistics. The Ministry plans to replicate similar centres nationwide, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for both genders and vulnerable groups.

This partnership marks a significant step toward empowering youth in Botswana. By combining government oversight with private sector support, the Molepolole youth centre will serve as a hub for learning, engagement, and positive community impact.
