Botswana Strengthens Digital Skills Through Huawei ICT Awards

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Innovation, Mr. Cecil O. Masiga, emphasized the vital role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in driving Botswana’s national development agenda. Speaking at the Huawei ICT Awards 2025–2026 Regional Competitions Finals held at Protea Hotel in Gaborone, he highlighted how technology shapes public service delivery, national competitiveness, and investment attraction. Mr. Masiga noted that digital skills are critical for preparing young professionals to participate effectively in the digital economy. He stressed that initiatives supporting technology education strengthen the country’s ability to integrate into regional and global markets. The event served as a platform to recognise student excellence and promote ICT development across Botswana.

Mr. Masiga further underscored the importance of public-private partnerships in advancing technology adoption and practical learning. Collaborations with industry partners expose students to emerging technologies, international standards, and applied environments that complement academic training. The Ministry remains committed to supporting digital skills development in tertiary institutions, expanding platforms that encourage innovation, and creating policies that foster ICT growth and youth engagement. The Huawei ICT Awards highlighted exceptional students participating in the Huawei ICT Competition programme. The awards recognise technical proficiency and dedication, providing a competitive platform for students to showcase their skills in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and Advanced Networking. Mr. Li Dalu congratulated the 12 finalists, noting that their success reflects preparation, commitment, and strong technical ability. He emphasized that these technologies are essential for driving economic growth, improving institutional efficiency, and fostering societal innovation. More than 300 students in Botswana have benefitted from Huawei ICT training programmes in recent years, demonstrating the programme’s reach and impact.

The awards and associated training programmes underscore Botswana’s commitment to building a digitally skilled workforce and advancing the ICT sector.
