The Botswana Institute for Technology Research & Innovation Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Dr Sebusang Enele Mophuti Sebusang as Chief Executive Officer, effective 1st February 2026. Dr Sebusang brings over 20 years of leadership experience across academic, corporate, and non-government sectors. His career spans executive management, consultancy, project leadership, and community engagement. The Board highlighted that his appointment positions BITRI to strengthen its role in developing sustainable, home-grown innovations that drive national economic growth.
Dr Sebusang holds a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Southampton, a PhD in Systems and Control Engineering from the University of Bristol, and an MBA from the University of Botswana. His academic credentials combine technical expertise with strategic management skills, enabling him to lead applied research initiatives effectively. He is certified as a Blackbelt in Lean Six Sigma and applies LEAN principles to optimize processes and organizational performance. This blend of engineering, systems thinking, and business management equips him to translate research into impactful, commercially viable technologies.
Under Dr Sebusang’s leadership, BITRI aims to enhance collaboration with industry, government, and community stakeholders. He will prioritize the development of technologies that address local challenges and support economic diversification. His experience as immediate past Executive Director – Technologies at BITRI involved advancing applied research projects and converting needs-based research into practical solutions. He has also led initiatives such as the Sesigo Project at the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships, demonstrating his ability to manage large-scale development programs that benefit communities.
Dr Sebusang has held senior governance positions, including membership on the University of Botswana Senate, and directorship roles at national institutions such as the Mmegi Group, the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority, and the Engineers Registration Board. These roles reflect his experience in policy development, regulatory oversight, and strategic leadership. BITRI anticipates that his guidance will accelerate innovation outputs and foster stronger integration between research and market-ready technologies.
Dr Sebusang’s appointment signals a renewed focus on sustainable innovation and capacity building in Botswana. By leveraging his technical expertise, management experience, and stakeholder networks, he aims to position BITRI as a hub for transformative research and technology development. The institute under his leadership will continue to focus on creating solutions that meet local needs, promote economic resilience, and strengthen Botswana’s position as a center for innovation in Southern Africa.
