Isaac Kgosi case: Politically sponsored harassment or genuine?

Former Director of the Directorate of intelligence and Security Services (DISS) has two (2) days in police custody now. There are mixed views on his arrest, while some believe he is answering for his sins, some believe his arrest is a politically motivated.

Kgosi’s arrest follows a raid conducted a his residence, which its search warrant was issued the same time as that for Former President His Excellency Lt. Gen. Dr. Seretse Khama Ian Khama’s residence.

According to Lawrence Ookeditse, the Publicity Secretary for Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), the recent raids which led to Kgosi’s arrest emanate from political hatred. This hatred, Ookeditse says has potential to destabilize the country.

“We must never ever make the mistake of making our politics about hate. That is easy to do, but difficult to undo. It begins just like this in countries where the governments are being overthrown easily and suddenly. It starts with excessive hatred whereby one can kill another at any time for their political ideas. We must stop now. All sensible citizens, even in the BDP, must call for justice and fairness now. Do not wait until the Masisi presidency has ended then bo le simolla go bua gore ne lo tshaba etc. Speak out, preserve our peaceful politics. If you do not and allow these to continue, a new political culture of violence will develop. Please, do not let it happen under your watch.” Ookeditse said through his Facebook post.

For his part, Kgosietsile Ngakaagae, a local prominent lawyer observed that Kgosi’s rights are being trampled upon by the law enforcement agencies. The celebrity lawyer noticed five (5) things on the video by Mmegi video showing Kgosi at court yesterday;

  1. Denial of access to a lawyer.
  2. Denial of family support
  3. Denial of a basic necessity (water)
  4. Denial of full information regarding arrest and detention, at the time of arrest
  5. Denial of dignity (A shower and breakfast)

“All these things do not matter to the many (Especially the CAVA side), who have decided to be willfully blind to procedural injustice, and to cheer on naked abuse because Kgosi is a political enemy.

Friends, I do not know if Isaac Kgosi, is guilty or not regarding what he has been accused of. Only a court of law can decide that question. But Ill die defending his right to be treated fairly (procedural and substantive justice) .

I have heard some say he treated people the way he is being treated as if that made it all right. Frankly, its a small minds argument Im not interested in. True, I have felt hard done under his reign, but thats besides the point. Justice is not a variable principle, and my commitment to the same is not situational.

The law, is the law, is the law. Please, respect Kgosi’s rights.” said Ngakaagae on his Facebook post.

Meanwhile, Kgosi’s case has been postponed again to tomorrow, meaning he spends another night behind bars. On the other side, raids on Khama’s different residences continues.
