The National Health Insurance, NHI, has taken another step toward building an inclusive health system by holding a stakeholder engagement meeting with union federations. The meeting formed part of the ongoing consultative process aimed at informing the formulation of a responsive and sustainable NHI policy framework.

The engagement created a structured platform for open and constructive dialogue. Union representatives shared practical insights drawn from worker experiences across sectors. They raised concerns related to affordability, access to services, benefit design and implementation timelines. These contributions are expected to play a key role in refining policy options that reflect the realities faced by employees and their families.

Union federations emphasized the importance of protecting workers from high out-of-pocket health costs. They also highlighted the need for equitable service delivery between urban and rural areas. Discussions further focused on transparency in fund management and the role of organized labour in ongoing oversight and public education.

NHI officials reaffirmed their commitment to meaningful stakeholder participation. They stressed that collaboration with unions strengthens policy credibility and improves public trust. According to NHI, inclusive consultation supports better decision-making and helps align health financing reforms with national development goals.

The meeting also addressed how NHI can contribute to stronger health service delivery. Topics included improving provider payment systems, expanding service coverage and ensuring financial sustainability. Stakeholders agreed that early engagement reduces resistance and supports smoother policy rollout.

NHI noted that engagement with union federations is part of a broader national consultation. Other stakeholders include employers, health professionals, civil society and community groups. Each engagement feeds into a policy process designed to balance efficiency, equity and long-term viability.

As Botswana advances toward universal health coverage, NHI continues to position stakeholder dialogue at the center of reform. The consultative approach signals a commitment to shared ownership of health policy and collective responsibility for system improvement.
