SECOND CONSIGNMENT OF LIVE ANIMALS ARRIVE

The second consignment of live animals which consist of hundred and fifty (150) breeding dairy goats and Ninety-two (92) breeding beef cattle all imported from Australia arrived this morning at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.

When receiving the consignment, His Excellency President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi stated that the government is working extremely hard to make Botswana the backbone of quality breeding animals and germplasm (embryos & semen) sourced from world-renowned breeders.

He further said the project is aimed at reversing the declining national herd and improving its genetic merit using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and genomics. He added that Government is not only buying livestock, but also cognizant of the needs of the farmers while considering adaptation issues for sustainability of the breeding stock.

His Excellency President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi also officially launched the Thuo Letlotlo Guidelines that will direct the implementation of the programme. The guidelines contain a total of twenty-nine (29) packages which include amongst others livestock subsectors, game farming, waste management, privatisation of extension service, livestock digitization, and enhancers to support each sub sector.
