University of Botswana Clinic Earns COHSASA Accreditation with 96 Percent Score

The University of Botswana Clinic has been accredited after achieving an overall score of 96 percent following a rigorous three year evaluation by the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa. The assessment placed the clinic among top performing health facilities in the region. The accreditation confirms that the clinic meets internationally recognised standards for quality and patient safety. This milestone reflects sustained commitment to high quality healthcare delivery. It also strengthens confidence in campus based health services.

COHSASA is a non profit organisation that offers internationally recognised accreditation and quality improvement programmes for healthcare facilities across sub Saharan Africa. Its standards are validated by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association. The accreditation process assesses hospitals and clinics against strict benchmarks for safety and service excellence. These benchmarks cover both clinical and administrative performance. Facilities that meet these standards demonstrate strong systems and reliable patient care.

Speaking during the handover of the accreditation certificate, UB Director of Health Dr Chillindi Maloiso described the achievement as a reflection of staff dedication. He said accreditation recognises professionalism and consistent effort across the healthcare team. Dr Maloiso noted that the outcome confirms that services offered at the clinic meet international standards of quality and safety. He stressed that the recognition validates internal systems and daily practices. According to him, the process strengthened a culture of accountability and improvement.

Dr Maloiso explained that the accreditation involved a comprehensive assessment of the clinic’s core functions. These included leadership and management, human resources, and administrative systems. Other areas assessed were patient access and rights, clinical risk management, and emergency response protocols. The evaluation also covered information management, infection prevention and control, and quality improvement systems. Primary health care service delivery formed a key part of the assessment.

Acting Vice Chancellor Mr Dawid Katzke echoed these views and credited the achievement to collective effort. He said accreditation is the result of teamwork, shared responsibility, and a common purpose. Mr Katzke emphasised that the recognition should be seen as a foundation for continued excellence. He added that maintaining the standards will require continuous learning and vigilance. Strong commitment to patient centred care remains essential.

The accreditation is expected to strengthen the University of Botswana campus health system. It will create a safer and more supportive environment for students, staff, and the surrounding community. With this recognition, the UB Clinic joins a select group of health facilities in Botswana that meet internationally recognised standards. The achievement positions the clinic as a trusted provider of quality healthcare services. It also reinforces the university’s commitment to wellness and institutional excellence.
