The Inaugural Botswana Local Government Transformation Symposium Day Two

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Honourable Kgotla Kenneth Autlwetse says government is aware of the challenges faced by local authorities. He said many people remain without economic opportunities and sometimes lose faith in their respective District Councils.

Speaking during day two of the Inaugural Botswana Local Government symposium in Maun, Minister Autlwetse said the Ministry needed to review its existing five-year strategy to improve its performance and respond to several emerging developmental demands from society.

He further said he convened the first Local Government Transformation symposium as his Ministry Strategy and Transformation Plan (MSTP) to identify the need for a fundamental redefining of the role and purpose of local government. He said that new opportunities are emerging, particularly around Digitalization that is transforming processes and recasting the relationship between citizens and services.

The Minister also noted with concern that Botswana is grappling with poverty and unemployment adding that it is vital that Local Governments attend to local economic development in line with the Vision 2036, the RESET Agenda, as outlined by the fourth pillar of the MSTP.

Minister Autlwetse said that the symposium was an opportunity to reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to improving the living conditions of the people of Botswana through a transformed developmental Local Government for Botswana.
