Roughly a couple of days after her property got ceased in relation to 2019 general election petition charges, Dr. Mpho Pheko is throwing blows at the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) accusing them of intimidation of opponents and killing of democracy which she terms “fragile”.
βThe BDP and all its legal operatives should quickly realize that there are DANGERS and HUGE COSTS to perceiving political opponents as enemies that deserve to be crushed, impoverished and shamed. I wish to focus on only two dangers and costs β DEMOCRACY and ECONOMIC costs.”

Mpho says it is a right of every Motswana to contest any leadership position of their choice with freedom, especially that Botswana does not have the luxury of a huge population. She urged those in power to instead take it as a responsibility to “maximize economic participation of every citizen of this nation” than shaming, disgracing and impoverishing those in the opposition parties.
“Instead of this reckless pursuit to shame, disgrace and impoverish petitioners, I beseech the leadership of the BDP and their legal operatives to remember that our pressing priorities are ; 1) VACCINATING the people of this nation against COVID-19 to ensure that Batswana and residents go back to some semblance of normality; 2) Facilitating employment creation; 3) Fixing the education and health systems to ensure dignity.” Mpho charged.
“SURELY, FINANCIALLY embarrassing us may seem entertaining and may temporarily boost egos β BUT PLEASE, remember that democracy is fragile β and can be easily lost. BE vigilant with the TEMPORARY power and privilege that you have given yourself to lead our GREAT NATION.” She lamented.
In support to his comrade, Dumelang Saleshando- Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) Vice President and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) President, declared that he and BCP will be with Dr. Pheko every step of the way, “We cannot leave one of our own to the vultures and simply hope that she will figure out a plan to resolve difficulties triggered by her decision to represent US in the elections. I will be spending most of the day today calling on the BCP structures to come to the party. Its in our DNA to stand up for each other.” He said.
