The Vice President Officially Opens Tsienyane Special Education Block

His Honour The Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, Mr Slumber Tsogwane officially opened a Special Education Block in Tsienyane Primary School yesterday in Rakops donated by Debswana ( Orapa, Letlhakane, and Damtshaa mines).

In his remarks, the Vice President alluded pride and joy, saying as a former teacher such moments are of great significance, and he has full appreciation and understanding of the impact of initiatives like these when resources are provided to facilitate learning.

The Vice President said the Government tries hard to facilitate learning but due to budgetary constraints some projects are delayed, denying the beneficiaries the much needed tools. He therefore commended Debswana and its partners for finding it fit to make this much appreciated contribution, particularly supporting children with Special needs.

Furthermore, His Honour said even though infrastructure is a challenge to the Government due to budgetary constraints, it is the Government’s priority to ensure that the education sector is adequately resourced to meet the needs of learners despite their backgrounds or disabilities. He said, the Government does not intend to leave anyone behind, a promise which is aligned to the United Nations Disability Strategy.

His Honour showed gratitude and said it is heartwarming to see the contribution diamonds continue to make to the economy. He thus challenged other organisations to also make contributions by investing in schools to make them more accessible to children with special needs.

For his part, the General Manager of Debswana (Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa mine) Mr Mogakolodi Maoketsa, said as an organization they have a Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme which aims at helping Batswana in the region they operate in. He said the CSI looks at developments in the area they operate in, the environmental impact and the under privileged individuals including people with disabilities. The CSI committee makes an assessment on all requests they receive as an organization and assist where there is need.
