His Excellency the President of the Republic of Botswana Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi this morning marked a historic moment with the signing off of the 1st Harvest from the Selibe Phikwe Citrus Farm. The consignment of citrus fruits is the first to be ferried off to Canada.

Dr Masisi said the shipment of the fruits to the export markets demonstrates that Botswana can export other agricultural products other than beef. The President also highlighted that the state-of-the-art Packhouse will ensure the production of citrus fruit is fully compliant with the stringent quality and health requirements of the export markets.

The Selibe Phikwe Citrus Project is Botswana’s first citrus export project and one of the largest consolidated citrus projects in Southern Africa with over 800,000 different citrus trees cultivars such as Lemons, Grapefruit, Mandarins, Navels and Valencia.
His Excellency stated that the European Union (EU) market has been secured and confirmed to receive all cultivars of Botswana’s fresh citrus fruits, and negotiations are ongoing with other five (5) Protocol Markets that include the USA, China, Vietnam, South Korea and Philippines.
