The Acting Minister of Environment and Tourism Hon. Nnaniki W. Makwinja has said that the Government recognizes the pivotal role played by local operators in shaping the tourism sector in Botswana. Hon. Makwinja was officiating at the Botswana Trave and Tourism Expo Local Operators workshop yesterday.

The Acting Minister highlighted that sustainable tourism involves the preservation of the environment as well as the empowerment of the local communities and promotion of responsible travel practices. She urged operators to embrace sustainable tourism principles in their business operations such as minimizing the environmental impact of their activities, supporting local economies, and nurturing a greater understanding and respect for Botswana’s cultural heritage, which also promotes mindset change.

Hon Makwinja stated that local operators are the bridge between visitors and the diverse communities that make up the nation of Botswana, and that it is imperative that they work together to ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared equitably, enhancing the livelihoods of the people, and preserving the authenticity of the Country’s cultural heritage.
