Dear Mr. President:

On behalf of the American people, I congratulate you and the people of Botswana on the occasion of your 50th anniversary of independence on September 30.

I deeply appreciate the strong partnership forged by our governments over many years of cooperation and mutual respect. Your leadership in wildlife protection and environmental conservation sets an example for the region and the world, and I’m so pleased my family was able to enjoy your country’s natural beauty during their 2011 visit.

The United States is delighted to celebrate Botswana’s half-century of independence and continued commitment to democracy. We wish you and all Batswana peace and prosperity in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
